A Niagara Falls Mainstay - The Como Restaurant

Traditional Italian/American fare including pasta, steak and seafood. Outdated interior desperately needs remodeling – dark, dingy red carpeting, old chandeliers and pink walls just don’t do this restaurant any justice, but it remains a local favorite. There is a deli right next door that serves up hot pasta and pizza during lunch, and you can get our favorite here – rolls & pizza bread. Food quality is mediocre. Not one of our favorites, but we tag along if others want to go there. Prices are moderate.

Niagara Falls Energy Fact

The first known effort to harness the waters of Niagara was in 1759, when Daniel Joncaire built a small canal above the Falls to power his sawmill.

Niagara Skylon Tower Restaurant

5200 Robinson Street

Let me preface this post by saying you go up the Skylon Tower to eat dinner for one thing - the view. There is no other place in Niagara Falls that you can get such an amazing view all while slowly rotating 360 degree giving you a city and waterfalls view.

That being said, the food at the Niagara Skylon Tower restaurant is, in our opinion, filled with mediocrity. We go here about once a year to enjoy the view and take guests who usually enjoy it immensly. If you are visiting Niagara Falls, I definately recommend it - and make sure you bring your camera. After dinner you can go up to the observation deck and take a look around - and of course you can go to the gift shop.

Plan on spending over $200 here for 2 people if you are going for dinner and ordering off the regular menu. If you would like to save a few bucks, check out the “early bird” specials. At last check, it was around $35-$40 per person but the menu is limited.
Our last visit was for the early bird. You can order such things as Beef Stroganoff (tough, not the best meat), Chicken Cordon Bleu and Salmon dishes.

Feel free to post your own review and experience of the restaurant, we would love to hear it!

Goodfellas Pizzeria is right in the middle of city market. This little restaurant serves up some of the best pizza and wings in the city. $21 will get your 15 slices and 25 chicken wings.  5 minutes from the Falls and worth the trip!

Peking Restaurant & Tavern

This place I remember going to since I was a child and remains one of my favorite sit down Chinese Restaurants. Excellent variety of dishes at resonable pricing. Located right on Stanley Avenue a hop, skip and  a jump from all of the major hotels. We have not been here in quite a while, but our last visit a little over a year ago was delicious. Feel Free to post your comments about Peking!

Birth Certificates & Photo ID After January

Posted in Niagara Falls Tourism News by Jim Thursday December 6, 2007

In a step back, the Department of Homeland Security now says that a Photo ID & Birth Certificate will be required after January 2008 to enter the United States. If you are traveling to or from Canada, make sure you start carrying your birth certificates along with a photo ID to ensure you can enter without problems!

Travelers Reminded of New Document Requirements Beginning January 31, 2008

Release Date: December 3, 2007

For Immediate Release

Office of the Press Secretary

Contact: 202-282-8010

Department of State: 202-647-2492

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the U.S. Department of State (DOS) remind the traveling public that as of Jan. 31, 2008, all adult travelers will be required to present proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate, and proof of identity, such as a driver’s license, when entering the United States through land and sea ports of entry. DHS will be issuing a notice in the Federal Register formally announcing the change.

This change is a necessary step to prepare travelers and ease the transition to the future requirements of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI). WHTI proposes to establish documentation requirements for travelers entering the United States who were previously exempt, including citizens of the U.S., Canada, and Bermuda. As recommended by the 9/11 Commission, Congress enacted WHTI in the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004. WHTI will result in both enhanced security and increased facilitation across the border once implemented. During this transition, DHS and the Department of State are working diligently to minimize the impact on legitimate trade and travel.

Currently, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers may accept oral declarations of citizenship from U.S. and Canadian citizens seeking entry into the United States through a land or sea border. However, as of January 31, 2008:

* Oral declarations of citizenship alone will no longer be accepted

* U.S. and Canadian citizens ages 19 and older will need to present a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, along with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate

* Children ages 18 and under will only be required to present proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate

* Passports and trusted traveler program cards - NEXUS, SENTRI and FAST - will continue to be accepted for cross-border travel

All existing nonimmigrant visa and passport requirements will remain in effect and will not be altered by this change.

DOS reminds the public that the current turnaround time for a passport is four to six weeks, so Americans planning international travel may wish to apply now. For information on obtaining a U.S. Passport visit www.travel.state.gov or call 1-877-487-2778. Specific documentation requirements for land, sea and air travel may be found at www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacation/ready_set_go/. To learn more about NEXUS, SENTRI and FAST, visit www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/trusted_traveler/.
