Niagara Falls Rainforest Café

Posted in Dining - Canada by Jim Wednesday April 2, 2008

The Rainforest Café is located on Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls Canada. There can be extensive waits to get into the restaurant during summer season due to the nature of the place. It is a jungle themed restaurant with animated elephants, gorillas and other jungle inhabitants. There is also a shark tank (yes with live sharks) and of course a gift store for you to spend more money.

It is very dark inside with shows every 10 minutes or so where all the jungle beasties come alive. It is a nice feature for the kids. Food quality is just OK and prices are moderate to expensive. Plan on spending upwards of $100 Canadian or more for a family of four people with elephant appetites after walking around all day. If you go there knowing you will spend at least $100, there will not be any surprises when the bill comes to your table. Otherwise pack the antacid for the stomach ache you’ll get after realizing how expensive it really was. Something has to feed all of those elephants I guess.

We have been there a few times, but each time we go, I become less and less impressed with the food quality; in fact we have decided it’s not worth it for us to go anymore because of the prices.

I recommend you don’t sit in the bar area next to the “rain storm” because the mist that is expelled is not controlled and floats all over the bar area, and seems to float right towards your face which gets rather annoying and proceeds to lay condensation all over the table of diners. We had to move tables because it was that bad – if it  means you have to wait an extra 10 minutes NOT to sit at a table in the bar area – wait the extra 10 minutes.  This can be asking a lot sometimes because we literally waited about an hour to get into the restaurant one visit while entertaining out of town guests.

Overall, it is a neat place to go if you have never been to a Rain Forest Café, but if you have been to another location elsewhere, you are probably not missing much.  But hey, you are on a Niagara Falls vacation, right?

The Wolfgang Puck Grand Cafe Niagara Falls

Wolfgang Puck is one of our favorite celebrity chefs. Serving up lunch & dinner. We have yet to visit the Grand Cafe in Niagara Falls, located right across the street from the Fallsview Casino resort; but if it is anything like the Wolfgang Puck in Vegas, you are in for a treat. Our online preview of the menu seemed similar to the Spago in Vegas, which was delicious. We’ll update this post just as soon as we get a chance to sample the fare. In the meantime, you are more then welcome to post your review in the comments section.

Niagara Skylon Tower Restaurant

Let me preface this post by saying you go up the Skylon Tower to eat dinner for one thing - the view. There is no other place in Niagara Falls that you can get such an amazing view all while slowly rotating 360 degree giving you a city and waterfalls view.

That being said, the food at the Niagara Skylon Tower restaurant is, in our opinion, filled with mediocrity. We go here about once a year to enjoy the view and take guests who usually enjoy it immensly. If you are visiting Niagara Falls, I definately recommend it - and make sure you bring your camera. After dinner you can go up to the observation deck and take a look around - and of course you can go to the gift shop.

Plan on spending over $200 here for 2 people if you are going for dinner and ordering off the regular menu. If you would like to save a few bucks, check out the “early bird” specials. At last check, it was around $35-$40 per person but the menu is limited.
Our last visit was for the early bird. You can order such things as Beef Stroganoff (tough, not the best meat), Chicken Cordon Bleu and Salmon dishes.

Feel free to post your own review and experience of the restaurant, we would love to hear it!

Peking Restaurant & Tavern

This place I remember going to since I was a child and remains one of my favorite sit down Chinese Restaurants. Excellent variety of dishes at resonable pricing. Located right on Stanley Avenue a hop, skip and  a jump from all of the major hotels. We have not been here in quite a while, but our last visit a little over a year ago was delicious. Feel Free to post your comments about Peking!

Canadian equivalent to Subway, although we tend to think Mr. Sub is actually better. If you are near a Subway or Mr. Sub and you are in Canada…check out Mr. Sub!
